Course Details
Course Delivery
At least six hours of study, delivered in a classroom or online with a WSET Approved Programme Provider. The WSET Level 1 Award in Wines is one of the most accessible wine qualifications. It is structured, focused, and built to fit your life.
Assessment
This qualification is assessed by a single closed-book exam of 30 multiple-choice questions. There are no essays. There is no blind tasting. The questions test what you have learned.
This qualification is regulated by Ofqual.
Entry Requirements
There are no entry requirements for this qualification. It is open to everyone. You simply need to be of legal drinking age in the country where you attend the course to take part in any tasting sessions. If you are unable to participate in tastings, that is not a barrier to completing the qualification.
In short: if you are curious about wine, you are ready.
What a WSET Level 1 Wines session looks like
OPENING
Welcome and orientation
Sovna frames the day, what the WSET Level 1 Award covers, and what it does not. You learn how the Systematic Approach to Tasting works and why it changes the way you experience wine.
MORNING
The grape, the place, the wine
How grape variety, climate, and winemaking choices end up in the glass. Taught clearly, without jargon, with tasting anchored to each concept as it is introduced.
MIDDAY
Tasting with structure
Six to eight wines, poured and discussed one by one. You apply the WSET Systematic Approach: sight, nose, palate, conclusion. Sovna guides you through every wine you taste, so nothing gets lost and everything makes sense.
AFTERNOON
Food, wine, and service
Pairing principles across any cuisine. Service temperature, glassware, decanting, and storage. The practical knowledge you use every week once the course is over.
CLOSING
Exam and certification
The WSET Level 1 examination. Thirty multiple-choice questions, forty-five minutes, pass mark seventy per cent. Certificates are issued by WSET London and arrive digitally within weeks.
